Abstract
Objectives£ºAn effective screening tool needs high sensitivity and specificity and consumes less time to administer to improve an early diagnosis of depressive patients in psychiatric and primary care setting. The aim of this study were to examine the reliability and the validity of the Korean version of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9(PHQ-9) well known as a commonly used screening tool for depression.
Methods£ºA total of seventy-four outpatients(n=67) and inpatients(n=7) diagnosed as major depressive disorder by Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview-Plus(MINI-Plus) in the department of psychiatry of Dong-San Medical Center performed the PHQ-9, PHQ-2, Beck Depression Inventory(BDI) and Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression(HRSD). Seventy-five individuals working in Dong-San Medical Center of a normal control group performed the PHQ-2 and PHQ-9.
Results£ºThe internal consistency and test-retest reliability were 0.95, 0.91. In comparison of mean scores of the PHQ-9 between major depressive disorder group and control groups, the differences between groups were statistically significant. In addition, correlation of the total scores of other depression scales with the PHQ-9 was statistically significant. The optimal cut-off point for major depression was 9 in PHQ-9(Sensitivity : 88.5%, Specificity : 94.7%).
Conclusion£ºThe Korean version of PHQ-9 have a good reliability and validity. The PHQ-9 would play a role of brief and useful measure for screening depression.
